Canada Launches OHPA Heat Pump Program to Boost Affordability and Cut Carbon Emissions

2024-06-06

In a bold move to enhance home affordability and mitigate climate change, the Canadian government has announced the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability (OHPA) program. This initiative, designed to assist low and middle-income households in transitioning from traditional oil-fired heating systems to energy-efficient heat pumps, marks a significant step towards a greener future.

The OHPA program offers eligible households grants of up to $10,000 to cater to the expenses of acquiring and installing heat pumps. This financial aid will not only slash energy bills but also contribute significantly towards the nation's carbon reduction goals." It is a win-win for your wallet and the environment," said Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Government of Canada.

The program is a component of the expansive Canada Greener Homes Initiative, which endeavors to foster sustainable home improvements nationwide. Heat pumps, capable of both heating and cooling homes, serve as a highly efficient alternative to traditional oil-fired furnaces. Operating primarily on electricity, and frequently harnessing renewable energy sources like solar panels, heat pumps constitute an environmentally responsible choice.

"The start up costs have been getting in the way for many households. So we’re stepping in, and helping cover the costs for even more of those who need it," said Seamus O’Regan. The OHPA program aims to remove that barrier, making it easier for Canadians to make the switch to a greener, more affordable heating solution. The OHPA program specifically covers the following costs:
● the purchase and installation of an eligible heat pump system (air source, cold climate air source, or ground source)
● necessary electrical upgrades and mechanical upgrades for a new heat pump
● installation of a backup electric heating system (as required)
● switching over other oil-using household systems, such as a water heater (where necessary)
● the safe removal of an oil tank

In addition to the financial incentives, the government is also providing information and support to help households make informed decisions about switching to heat pumps. This includes resources on selecting the right heat pump for a home, understanding installation requirements, and maintaining the new system. With the launch of the OHPA program, the Canadian government is taking a major step towards its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. By promoting energy-efficient home improvements such as heat pumps, the country is reducing its reliance on fossil fuels and moving towards a cleaner, greener future.
