SG ready Of R290 Propane Heat Pump

SG Ready (short for smart grid ready) is a label certifying that a heat pump or a complimentary management technology can respond to defined external control signals. The label was introduced in 2012 by the German heat pump association (Bundesverband Wärmepumpe, BWP) together with 17 heat pump manufacturers. In practice, SG Ready tags have become a de facto standard feature of heat pumps.

What does SG Ready certification mean?

Heat pump is a device that can transfer the heat energy of low temperature heat source to high temperature heat source, the heat source that can be used by general heat pump is divided into two categories: one is the heat source in nature. Such as air, soil, water, solar energy, etc. The second is the waste heat and waste heat discharged in life or industrial production, such as industrial wastewater and urban sewage.

However, like natural heat sources are more unpredictable and more dependent on the weather, so in recent years, how to better make energy use stable has become a problem to be overcome.

As a result, many heat pump manufacturers continue to develop and manufacture heat pumps that pass the test and have the SG Ready mark. These heat pumps can operate according to price signals and the state of the grid, making them more intelligent.

Heat pumps with SG Ready certification represent the ability to support the grid, have a lower carbon footprint, and are more cost-effective to operate.

With the SG Ready input, your heat pump receives a signal that, when enough solar energy is available, causes it to start producing warm water by raising the target temperature of the storage tank. So you store electricity in the form of heat, and in most cases the storage temperature rises enough that the heat pump requires little to no electricity at night. This will reduce energy costs.

How to use SG Ready?

SG Ready supports four different operating modes for heat pumps. These modes are communicated via two binary switches (indicated in brackets below):

Mode 1 – Blocked operation (1:0): The operation for the heat pump is blocked for a maximum of two hours per day.

Mode 2 – Normal operation (0:0): The heat pump runs in energy-efficient normal mode.

Mode 3 – Encouraged operation (0:1): The operation of the heat pump is encouraged to increase electricity consumption for heating and warm water.

Mode 4 – Ordered operation (1:1): The heat pump is ordered to run. This state supports two variants which must be adjustable on the controller for different tariff and utilization models:

i) the heat pump is switched on

ii) the heat pump is switched on AND the warm water temperature is raised

Things to watch out for:

1. Need to use system components suitable for heat pumps, hot water heat pumps and interface compatible.

2. Heat pumps include domestic hot water heating devices with or without heat from water, air or ground.

3. The heat pump must support all four operating modes. As an additional option, room temperature can be used as a variable that controls the system temperature, i.e. the return temperature.

4. The hot water heat pump must have a controller that supports raising the set temperature to utilize heat storage. This corresponds to working mode 4.

5. Interface compatible system components are devices capable of sending digital control signals to the heat pump in accordance with the SG Ready operating mode.

6. Interface compatible system components must support at least two of the four operating modes.

7. While most heat pump manufacturers active in Europe also meet the SG Ready requirement, it is not a requirement for any country.
